The Simple Bowl: Nourishing Yourself When the Tank is Empty

By the time evening rolls around, when the day has already asked a lot of my energy, my brain is usually too tired to scan a cookbook or look up a recipe online. Whether that exhaustion comes from work, parenting, or simply the weight of a full day, it’s a familiar feeling. For a long time, that meant a lot of wasted groceries and a lot of “emergency” meals that didn’t actually make me feel good.

I haven’t mastered the art of meal planning yet. I don’t have a freezer full of perfectly prepped, labeled containers (though I’m working on it!). But I have found one thing that is changing the way I eat, saving me time, and—thankfully—cutting down on my food waste: a simple bowl.

Nourishing bowl with ground beef, roasted sweet potatoes, avocado, and cottage cheese.

The Magic of the Formula

I found a recipe on Instagram that clicked for me, and it has become one of my go-to meals. It’s a simple combination of mashed sweet potato, avocado, cottage cheese, an egg, and ground beef.

The reason this works isn’t that it’s fancy—it’s because it’s a formula.

The beauty is in the flexibility. You can use some or all of the ingredients I listed, or get creative with whatever is in your fridge. On the days I need something extra, I’ll throw in a handful of leafy greens and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar for a little brightness.

It’s also incredibly easy to make for my family. My son loves it, and I love knowing he’s eating something simple, filling, and full of real ingredients.

It’s fast, it’s nourishing, and honestly? It feels like a hug in a bowl.

My "Low-Bar" Secret: The Roasted Sweet Potato

The biggest game-changer for me has been making the sweet potato a staple. Almost every day, I roast one or two in the air fryer—no chopping required. Once they’re done, I simply remove the skin and mash them.

That’s it.

Sometimes it’s the classic orange sweet potato, and sometimes I pick up the purple ones when I find them. I love their deep color, and they’re absolutely delicious. Sweet potatoes are one of those foods that just feel nourishing—warm, filling, and naturally rich in nutrients. They make the bowl feel a little extra special.

It’s become a tiny, convenient, almost sacred ritual. Having that base ready to go means that even when I’m at my most tired, I’m always just five minutes away from a real meal. It’s a small way of honoring my body’s needs before the hunger-panic sets in.

Plus, I’m never alone in this ritual. As soon as that sweet potato is done, my dog Jupiter is right there by my side, patiently waiting for his share. It’s become our little moment together in the kitchen.

Grace in the Kitchen

If you’re struggling with food waste or finding the energy to eat well, start small. You don’t need a perfect seven-day plan right away—you just need one “formula” that you actually look forward to creating.

For me, it’s this bowl. Finding one healthy, simple meal that truly works for my life has been a spark of motivation I didn’t expect. It’s made me curious to explore other simple ways to nourish myself without the overwhelm.

This bowl is how I’m practicing being more intentional with my shopping and gentler with my energy. It’s a small step toward building a sustainable “Real Food” practice.

But more than that, it’s a reminder that nourishment doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as a warm bowl, a few good ingredients, and the quiet moment of caring for yourself at the end of a long day.

And right now, that is more than enough.
